Memories of Murder (2003)

“I only beat you up because I care about you. ” – Detective Cho Yong-koo

Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A group of detectives try to solve the case of serial killer who is raping and murdering young women in their small area of Korea.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across and despite usually having misgivings about watching a Foreign language film, I decided to give it a try.

The film has a great mystery and they do a wonderful job having the characters try to find ways to solve these cases.

The pacing of the story is done really well and the plot is moved along in a thought out way that is able to add to the suspense and tension level as things progress.

Love the way that each of the detectives trues to think of varying ways to solve this crime and try to utilize their various skills in seeking a conclusion to this crime that seems to be so difficult to solve.

The story is filled with some really enjoyable twists and turns that constantly make the characters (and ultimately the viewer) question what is truly going on.

The very fact that this movie is based on real events from nearly 35 years ago also helps enhance things because it is quite apparent throughout that much of what we are watching actually happened.

Bottom Line – Excellent detective story that works really well. The story is paced perfectly and things move along in a way that adds so much to the suspense and tension of everything going on. The story is filled with some great twists and turns that constantly changes what the characters (and ultimately the viewer) believes is going on. Love the way that each of the characters use their own skills and methods while trying to find a way to solve this very strange and unique crime. The fact that this is based on fact also helps raise the stakes of it all as we are constantly aware that much of what we are being told really happened. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Director Quentin Tarantino named it, along with Bong’s The Host (2006), as one of his Top 20 favorite movies since 1992. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
