The Mummy Returns (2001)

“It’s only a chest. No harm ever came from opening a chest.” – Evelyn

“Yeah, right, and no harm ever came from reading a book. You remember how that one went?” – Rick

Number of Times Seen – Three times (Theater in ’01, 22 Apr 2008 and 23 Feb 2020)

Brief Synopsis – The mummified body of Imhotep is shipped to England where Rick and Evelyn must now try and stop him from coming back to life once again.

My Take on it – This is a fun series that does a nice jo of trying to rip off many of the aspects that made the Indiana Jones films so enjoyable.

This film actually works really well largely due to the great chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz who work so well together as a team.

The story of this film picks up a few years after the previous movie and they find a way to allow these character’s arc to continue things in a very enjoyable way.

The film brings back numerous characters from the previous film while also adding some new ones that add to the atmosphere of things.

The addition of a son to these characters was a great idea because he is such a great character who they can develop along the way.

The film utilizes its special effects quite cleverly and makes things look really cool and realistic as the story begins to unravel.

The film unfortunately the tries too hard to give us comic relief which just doesn’t wok in these kind of scenarios very well and that takes away from things feeling more impactful in all that they try to give us here.

Bottom Line – Really fun Indian Jones ripoff that works so well largely due to the great chemistry between Fraser and Weisz. The story picks up a few years after the previous film and allows for these characters to continue their story in a really enjoyable way. The addition of their son adds so much to the story because he is a great character who is interesting to watch as the story develops.  The special effects are great and allow things to look really cool as the story unfolds. The film tries too hard to add comic relief to things and that actually takes away from the kind of impact a story like this should have. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Freddie Boath was a big fan of The Mummy (1999), having seen it over 30 times. He passed on the opportunity to play in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) to participate in this movie, because The Mummy (1999) is one of his favorite films. He knows so much about the movie that he even served as sort of a consultant of the first film for this film for the other crew and cast members. He knows every line and detail of the movie. When anyone on the set of The Mummy Returns (2001) needed to know something about the first movie, they asked him. This was his first professional acting job. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
