Number of Times Seen – Twice (3 Nov 2001 and 12 Apr 2020)
Brief Synopsis – A group of college friends make a bet that whoever gets married last will win a lot of money.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I recalled seeing not long after it came out but didn’t remember anything about the plot or story line at all…
..So it was finally time to check it out again.
This film has a hilarious premise that is presented in a great way that helps keep it so much fun.
I have always loved Jerry O’Connell ever since his days in Stand By Me (1986) and the TV shows My Secret Identity and Sliders.
He is perfectly cast in the lead of this film and does a wonderful job holding his own in this kind of raunchy comedy.
He has great chemistry with co-star Shannon Elizabeth and they both find ways to keep the story interesting to watch unfold despite its predictability.
The story and plot are quite crude and very over the top, but they still find a way to work due to fact that it stays funny throughout.
The supporting cast helps keep things really fun and it all moves along at a great pace.
The story thread with Horatio Sanz is great and we get to see how funny things can be just by misunderstandings, misconceptions and visual tricks.
The characters are pretty shallow here, but that is to be expected from a film with a premise like this.
Bottom Line – Hilarious premise that is done quite well. O’Connell is great in the lead and he and Elizabeth have great chemistry throughout. The story might be crude and over the top, but it still works because of the fact that is finds a way to stay so funny the entire way through. The supporting cast is also fun to watch and I love the story thread dealing with Sanz because they manage to find ways to keep things funny largely due to misconceptions and visual tricks that help keep this quite entertaining. The characters are a bit too shallow, but that’s par for the course in this kind of movie.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The idea for Tomcats came to writer/director Gregory Poirier when he overheard a couple of college buddies discussing their own bachelor bet. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
