Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Apr 2020)
Brief Synopsis – After a famous gunman is made Marshall of the small town known as Warlock, he faces opposition from a newly appointed deputy and many of the townspeople.
My Take on it – This is yet another film that I had never heard of before coming across it while seeking out ways to expand my movie watching knowledge of films of Henry Fonda.
This is actually a pretty good western and it works quite well largely due to the chemistry between stars Fonda and Widmark.
They do a wonderful job showing how each of these men do things in vastly different ways, yet ultimately, they both get the same results.
The fact that neither can see how the other’s methods could be productive shows how human they really can be.
Most of the themes in this movie are typical ones used in so many westerns, yet despite not finding anything really unique to do here, things still work.
The characters are developed really well here and that helps make the viewer get a better understanding of all that they are attempting to accomplish here which in turn makes us care more about all that they do and the reasoning behind it.
The fact that they both do it in different ways seems inconsequential because they both still get similar results.
Bottom Line – Pretty good western that works due to the performances of Fonda and Widmark. Love the way that they both use different methods to try and get the same results yet neither can see the methods of the others as being productive. The film follows many themes often used in Westerns and doesn’t manage to find a way to feel unique enough despite still doing a nice job here. The characters are developed well which helps make us care more about them and all that they are trying to accomplish, even if in different ways. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Director Edward Dmytryk tells in his biography that Hank Fonda was a so fast drawer with his six shooter piece that he – Dmytryk – had to slow up the action so the audience could savor it properly. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
