Waterloo (1970)

This a Covid-19 2020 minireview!

“Next to a battle lost, the saddest thing is a battle won. ” – Duke of Wellington

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Aug 2020)

Brief Synopsis – At the height of his power, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte wages war against the British on the battlefield of Waterloo.

Bottom Line – Interesting epic film that is enjoyable to watch yet the story is told in a far too chaotic fashion. The cast is great and both Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer are powerful as the two lead characters even if neither is developed well enough here. The battle itself is shown in great detail and allows us to see how Generals can use their soldiers as pawns in order to find a way to ultimately win the battle.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Soldiers of the Red Army were used as extras to portray the British army. They panicked repeatedly and scattered during the filming of some of the cavalry charges. Attempts to reassure them by marking the closest approach of the horses with white tape similarly failed, and the scene was cut. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
