Gale Force (2002)

“Modern day pirates… One week to stay alive or maybe die trying.” – Jack MacRea

Number of Times Seen – 1 (31 Aug 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A suspended detective is chosen to be a part of a new reality TV show where contestants must find a treasure on a deserted island.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before I recently came across it.

I had really low expectations watching this and even those expectations weren’t reached.

The premise is actually quite good and give the fact that this movie was made right when Reality TV started becoming really popular gives things even more weight.

Treat Williams is always a fun actor to watch and this film is no exception to that.

He is great in the lead role even if he delivers a very over the top kind of performance.

The story itself is presented in a very cheesy way which hurts things even more because it makes things so much harder to look for aspects of the story to take seriously.

The characters are all very undeveloped and they all fit to stereotypes and tropes that one might expect from a story like this.

The dialogue is quite silly and often makes no sense what so ever.

The film’s action scenes and effects are quite terrible and in many cases make things even more laughable to watch because the pyrotechnics are too much.

Loved seeing William Zabka in this film even if his role is quite small and limited despite being an important one.

Bottom Line – Great premise that doesn’t work at all. Williams is fun in the lead, but his performance is a bit over the top. The story is presented in a very cheesy fashion that doesn’t allow for it to be taken seriously. The characters are all very superficial and stereotypical in everything that they say or do. The action scenes are horrendous from a technical perspective which makes it all so laughable to watch unfold. Loved seeing Zabka in a prominent role, even if his screen time is extremely limited.  Complete waste of time.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When the helicopter is struggling to land near the end, the rain is clearly from one large hose – it is only raining on one part and is rotating. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
