Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Jan 2021)
Brief Synopsis – An elderly Holocaust survivor befriends a young orphan on the verge of becoming a criminal.
My Take on it – I had heard about this film a few months ago because of the fact that it features the return to the screen for Sophia Loren after more than a decade.
The story is told in a very tender way and it actually manages to be much better than one might expect.
Loren gives a very powerful performance here and her chemistry with the young orphan played by Ibrahima Gueye is great because it allows things to feel even more realistic.
She plays this character in a two fold way because we get to see how her staunch opinions affect those around her, but her bouts with dementia also cause her to act very passive and confused at the same time which allows us to see how these things affect her.
The story itself is slow moving and that tales away a bot from things because there are some scenes that drag on a bit too much.
The way that she inspires her young charges works well in showing how adamant she is in helping others change their lives to being more productive ones.
The movie only develops the two main characters on a thorough basis and there are a few supporting characters that would have been served better of they too were more developed because of the impact that they have on the two main characters since it would help enhance things even more.
Bottom Line – Tender story that works better than expected. Loren gives an amazing performance here that is quite powerful. Her character is both stanch in her opinions, but as dementia begins to creep in, we can see how things are slowly changing for her. The story moves a bit too slow and besides the two main characters, they fail to develop any of them which makes things a bit more frustrating. Recommended!
