Man of the Year (2006) – Encore Review

“The government said recently that we’re cutting back spending, yet NASA blew $28 million to develop a fountain pen that writes upside down in zero gravity. The Russians solved the same problem with a 5-cent pencil… and after two cases of vodka, it’s still writing.” – Tom Dobbs

Brief Synopsis – The host of a popular news satire show decides to run for President and is surprised by how well he does.

My Take on it – Such a fascinating idea which seems even more profound after 18 years than it probably was when it originally was made. Robin Williams is the perfect choice to play the lead and his jokes seem so perfect. Knowing that he would ad lib so much makes me wonder how much of it was in the script and how much was created as they filmed. The premise might seem very far fetched, but it seems to be going in the right direction in how it all is presented. The supporting cast is also great with Lewis Black, Laura Linney and Christopher Walken adding so much to the way this all plays out.  This movie once again helps re-enforce the idea that there is far too much corruption and debt to wealthy supporters among politicians and that things need to be changed in the system which has become so corrupt no matter what side of the aisle the politicians all sit.  It’s too bad that this kind of idea probably won’t ever be made a reality because it would be so refreshing to see something like this happening.  Each time I watch this film, I enjoy it even more and more because it has some very profound ideas that they present.

Highly Recommended!
