Let’s see what I thought of this movie:

“Mussolini is not so clever like Hitler, he can dress his Italians up only to look like thieves, cheats, murderers, he cannot like Hitler, make them feel like that. He cannot, like Hitler, scrape from the conscience the knowledge that right is right and wrong is wrong, or dig holes in their heads to plant his own ten commandments: steal from thy neighbor, cheat thy neighbor, kill thy neighbor.” – Guiseppe

Brief Synopsis – A team of Allied soldiers try to get across the Sahara desert during World War II.

My Take on it – Such a great look at the complicated factors of war. Humphrey Bogart is amazing in the lead role as a tank commander trying to keep his men alive during this very dangerous trek. The group of characters brought together for this story is great and due to the diverse nature of their backgrounds, it helps keep things so gripping to watch as things play out. The undertones of the story and the decisions the characters need to make along the way, leave so much to ponder about the way people need to act during extreme situations. The film allows for the viewer to see how hellish war can be when soldiers are thrust into situations where they must make hard decisions in difficult situations. The multi national group of characters helps show the multi-faceted nature of the war and the viewer gets to see how they each have different viewpoints on the events based solely on their reasons for taking part in the war.

Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Two thousand tons of sand were transported to the set in order to create the feel of loose desert sand, as reported in the “New York Times”. The newspaper also reported that shadows were spray-painted on desert hills to enable them to be seen more clearly by the audience. In addition, sand dune ripples were created by spray-painting the sand with light paint and then turning on a wind-machine. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10) (no change from original review)
