Movies From the Hat III – Bound (1996)

This is my 1,996th movie review

Thanks to Dan for recommending this film to me!

bound“I’m not apologizing for what I did. I’m apologizing for what I didn’t do. ” – Violet

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Feb 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A gangster’s girlfriend joins forces with her next door neighbor, an ex-con to steal millions of mafia money from her boyfriend and blame him in the process.

My Take on it – I can’t believe that I had never seen this movie before!

It really shows that the Wachowski Brothers knew how to write and direct a great movie even before they hit us all with The Matrix (1999) just three years later.

The plot is written so well and methodically planned out that you don’t even see all of the surprises as they are being set up.

This is definitely a movie that I’ll have to see again to be able to absorb it all.

Cast is great;  Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon have amazing chemistry together both as crime partners and as lovers.

It’s even to feel their love as oppose to just lust for one another.

Bottom Line – Great idea that really shows that the Wachowski’s had a future in writing and directing. Tilly and Gershon are great together both as crime partners and lovers. Plot is superbly written and planned out so well.  So much happens that I’ll have to watch it again in order to absorb it all in. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When executives at some studios read the script, they told the Wachowskis that if they changed the character of Corky to that of a man, they would be interested. The siblings declined, saying “that movie’s been made a million times, so we’re really not interested in it.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  1. This has been one of my most favorite thrillers because of the methodological script (as you have aptly put) that blows your mind in the end. And, I am thankful that they didn’t change the character of Corky to a man, as that wouldn’t have been that awesome!
Hail the Wachowskis for giving us such a gem!

  2. Yes!! I’m so happy you liked my recommendation Rob! Bound is one of my fav thrillers ever, ranking up there with the Coens’ Blood Simple. From the stylish opening shot, with a twisting and investigative camera, I was hooked. Years before it was hip to have gays or lesbians represented on film, Bound broke new ground. This neo noir was so good the Wachowskis were able to make The Matrix next. I was in high school when this came out, I reviewed it in film studies, with a presentation for the class. My teacher was so cool… especially for a Catholic school 😉 she was Catholic cool to let me share this twisted violent R-rated thriller.
