Well, It’s finally here, after a little less than 3 years, I have reach a new milestone!
This is my 2,000th movie review!!!
Thanks to Darren for recommending this film to me!
“We met at Starbucks. Not at the same Starbucks but we saw each other at different Starbucks across the street from each other. ” – Meg Swan
Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Feb 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A mockumentary of the lives of 5 competitor/owners in a nationwide Dog Show.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I watched with slight trepidation because I really didn’t have high expectations for it.
I was actually quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it in the end.
Christopher Guest once again shows his Mockumentary style talents and we get to watch some great characters spill their thoughts on competitive Dog Shows.
Many of Guest’s regulars like Eugene Levy and Michael McKean are great here, but the one actor who steals every scene he is in is Fred Willard as a Dog Show Commentator who really knows little to nothing about the sport. The way his character makes mistakes over and over but doesn’t even get phased by it is amazing.
The interviews with the characters are all so telling as to who they are and what their goals are before, after and during the competition itself.
I think it’s even better to have watched this for the first time now since I am able to recognize how many of his mockumentary techniques are used weekly on so many TV shows most notably by Modern Family.
Bottom Line – Much better than I had thought it would be. Guest shows his mockumentary talents once again giving us great “interviews” with very competitive dog-owners. Funniest character is played by the amazing Fred Willard who makes standing out a profession and still steals the show. Rest of the cast is great and features some of Guest’s regulars. Very funny to watch this after seeing how many of his techniques are now used weekly on many TV shows, most notably Modern Family. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When the manager of the hotel is showing the various cleaning products he mentions a rockband trashing their room and roasting a goat. The rockband is of course the film makers alter-ego Spinal Tap. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
