Demolition Man (1993)

demolition-man“We’re police officers! We’re not trained to handle this kind of violence! ” – Erwin

Number of Times Seen – Between 5-10 times (Theater in ’93, cable, video, DVD, 17 Sep 1999 and 16 Nov 2016)

Brief Synopsis – When a convicted criminal escapes from a cryo prison in the near future, the police must awaken a former cop in order to stop him.

My Take on it – I saw this film in the theater when it came out and have always loved the way this film was done.

Both Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes are superb as the leads and the chemistry they have together makes the movie even more thrilling to watch.

The characters are perfect anachronisms for the “sanitized” future and this helps keep things humorous yet also entertaining.

Sandra Bullock, who wasn’t so well know at this point is great as Stallone’s new partner who is obsessed with the past which helps lead to even more scenes that work really well on multiple levels.

The future as portrayed here serves as both a serious and comical interpretation of society now and (potentially) then and works extremely well at getting across its message.

The premise itself works so well and is very successful from lots of different standpoints.

The fact that Stallone was able to take on a role like this, shows how diverse and actor he can be.

Bottom Line -Stallone and Snipes are great as the two leads here because both characters work so well as anachronisms.  Bullock is fun as the partner who is obsessed with the past. Loved the way they portray the future because it is both serious and comical at the same time.  The premise works extremely well and the movie is very entertaining from numerous standpoints.  Stallone is excellent and shows how diverse he can really be. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to screenwriter Daniel Waters, the inspiration for the three shells came about when he was writing a scene where Spartan has to use a restroom. He was trying to come up with futuristic things you’d find in there. He was having trouble, so he called a buddy, another screenwriter across town, asked him if he had any ideas. Ironically enough that person was in the bathroom when he answered the phone, looked around his bathroom and said ‘I have a bag of seashells on the toilet as a decoration.’ Waters said ‘Ok, I’ll make something out of that.’  (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy
