dtgirbp-1974Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Chinatown
The Conversation
The Godfather Part II
Lenny
The Towering Inferno

Biggest Snub:

The Longest Yard

My Overall Thoughts:

This was another year with some great choices as part of the nominees.  I loved 4 f the 5 of them and any of them could have won in the end.

They made the right choice tho, because not only is GFP2 and amazing film on its own, but it also enhances the knowledge and depth of the original film.

My Rankings:

Movies

  • 5. – Lenny – Hoffman is pretty good as the late controversial comedian Lenny Bruce, but the film lacks depth and the story drags too much.
  • 4. – The Conversation – Hackman is great here as a surveillance specialist who is too introverted and distant and how his work affects his life.
  • 3. – The Towering Inferno – Newman and McQueen are great here in this epic disaster film that creates some great characters and ups the ante on the suspense because we never know who will make it or not.
  • 2. – Chinatown – Great detective film that does a great job of keeping things moving at a superb pace. The twists and turns throughout the story keep things so interesting the whole way through.  Loved how they slowly give us information about the past history of some of the characters which gives us insight into what may or may not be relevant later on. Nicholson, Dunaway and Huston are all excellent here but Nicholson stands out because he is able to show how great an actor he could be with this role.  One of Polanski’s best films!
  • 1. – The Godfather Part II – Excellent continuation of the first film that gives us so much more depth to the characters and how they got to where they did.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most Definitely! – TGP2 is a great continuation of the original film and gives us so much more depth to the characters and their situations and was definitely deserving of being the first (and only) sequel to also win BP along with the original.
