Raw Deal (1986)

“When I want to make friends, I’ll go to summer camp. ” – Monique

Number of Times Seen – at least twice (Cable in the 80’s and 22 May 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A cop goes undercover as a mobster in order to settle an old score.

My Take on it – When one things of a gangster film, you usually think of threatening and imposing characters who are all quite intelligent.

None of that happens in this film, in fact the opposite is true.

This film is a typical Arnie film of the 80’s and is filled with action scenes yet the plot is super thin, pretty silly and lacks any kind of coherence along the way.

Arnie is out of his depth in the lead role because he doesn’t come off as being smart enough for the role.

None of the mobsters seem threatening enough and instead seem to be too lightweight.

The backstory of the main character and his undercover role also seem too weak

It’s [possible that this film was more appreciated when it came out 30 years ago, yet it doesn’t age well enough to be enjoyable today.

If you’re looking for a film with a bit of intellect, this isn’t for you because it only involves brute force and that is done mediocrely at best.

Not a film I think Arnie should be most proud of….

Bottom Line – This film is merely a typical Schwarzenegger film filled with action and muscle but lacking any kind of coherent plotline. The mobsters don’t feel threatening enough, the undercover story is weak and Arnie is just unbelievable in the lead here. This might have been much better 30 years ago, but it’s not for anyone looking for a thinking man’s film, it’s all brute and mediocre at best.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Arnold Schwarzenegger only agreed to star in this picture after much haggling in exchange for dissolving his multi-picture agreement with Dino De Laurentiis. He had one picture left with the producer and was actually very interested in doing Total Recall (1990), but De Laurentiis objected, feeling that he was not suitable for the lead role of Quaid. Instead, Patrick Swayze was already cast before the bankruptcy. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
