Shrek Forever After (2010)

“There’s a stack of freshly made waffles in the middle of the forest! Don’t you find that a wee bit suspicious?” – Shrek

Number of Times Seen – 2 (21 Oct 2010 and 15 Jun 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Shrek makes a deal with the untrustworthy Rumpelstiltskin and  has one day to get Fiona to fall in love with his again.

My Take on it – One of things that I feel always plagued this franchise was its lack of originality in its storylines.

In this film, they break that circle and taking the idea of It’s A Wonderful Life (1946) and applying it to Shrek was truly a genius idea.

By doing so, they made the story and setting feel so innovative and fresh and not another rehash of the previous 3 movie’s ideas.

This also allows the filmmakers to play with so many fun ideas with all of the characters.

This film like the previous ones relies heavily on referencing many forms of fairy tales and other media and it mostly works quite well here.

The infusion of interesting new characters along with reinventing old characters, things stay interesting the entire way through.

I’m quite glad that they chose to end the saga of Shrek on a high note instead of dragging out the same story over and over for many years.

The voice cast is great as always and along with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Bandaras and Eddie Murphy, we also get Jane Lynch, Walt Dohrn, Jon Hamm, Craig Robinson, Lake Bell, Kathy Griffin, Mary Kay Place and Kristen Schaal doing really fun voice work here.

Bottom Line – Great idea of sending Shrek on an It’s A Wonderful Life (1946) kind of quest.  The storyline feels quite fresh and innovative in this setting and it allows the filmmakers to play with so many fun ideas.  The references to other media and the infusion of new and old characters keeps this film quite interesting the whole way through.  Definitely a fitting end to the saga of Shrek and Fiona. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – As the head of the story, Walt Dohrn would perform all the voices during storyboard meetings. No other actors came close to matching the voice he had come up with for Rumpelstiltskin, and so he was cast. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
