Movies From the Hat VI #7 – Vern’s Pick – To Die For (1995)

This is my 3444th Review

Thanks to  Vern of Vern’s Video Vortex for this recommendation.

“I’ll be here every day for life, plus 30 years, if I live that long.” – Jimmy

Number of Times Seen – Twice  (cable in the 90’s and 9 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – An aspiring TV personality befriends a group of teenagers in order to put forth a devious plan.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw years ago but didn’t recall it being so great, but I was happy to revisit it and see if my memories of it aren’t as clear as I thought.

Unfortunately my opinion of it wasn’t raised upon this rewatch.

The plot itself isn’t as riveting as I would have expected from such an idea based on some real events that it tries to imitate.

Director Gus Van Sant’s style has never really been to my liking and this film just doesn’t work as well as I would have expected with such a cast.

Nicole Kidman is great in the lead and gives us an icy cold performance as this woman who will do anything to get ahead in her field.

Loved Matt Dillion’s performance also as Kidman’s innocent husband and he plays it perfectly.

Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck both show their future promise with there parts in this film.

The story itself just doesn’t work so well here despite the great cast.

Bottom Line – Kidman is great here, but the story itself just isn’t as riveting as the real life ones that this tries to imitate.  The rest of the cast also do a fine job here with Pheonix and Affleck showing their future promise.  Dillon plays Kidman’s innocent husband perfectly.  I’ve never been a huge fan of Van Sant’s style and this film just doesn’t work as well as I had hoped it would.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Once she’d read the script, Nicole Kidman was determined to land the lead role. This involved tracking down ‘Gus van Sant”s personal phone number and ringing him at home. She spent 40 minutes talking to him on the phone about her thoughts on Suzanne and how to play her. Van Sant called back 2 hours later to tell her she’d got the part. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. Thanks for reviewing this one Rob. Sorry about my late reply. I thought the story of this was excellent. We saw one woman’s drive to be the best and she did whatever it took. It didn’t matter who she hurt in the process, she was going to be a star. I think it had a lot to say about people’s drive to succeed. How far would you go to become famous?
