Movies From the Hat VI #22 – Ray’s Pick – Funny Games (2007)

This is my 3459th Review

Thanks to Ray for this recommendation.

“Whether by knife or whether by gun, losing your life can sometimes be fun. ” – Paul

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Oct 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A family on vacation receive two uninvited guests who take them hostage just for the fun of it.

My Take on it – This is a film that based on the premise seemed to be an interesting idea, but just doesn’t work as well as it might have.

The premise is quite a scary one and I think it would ave been much more effective if we were to be given characters that we could care about more.

All of the main characters feel somewhat distanced from us which doesn’t help form any kind of connection.

The games that these characters play is pretty psychotic and we constantly wonder what will eventually happen as things more along.

I wanted to feel more engaged in it all, but the distance felt from the story just didn’t allow for that to happen.

The dialogue is good, but they leave too many questions unanswered for it to be a satisfying experience

This is a film that I can’t say was terrible, but based on it’s themes alone, I don’t believe I will ever have the inclination to watch again.

Bottom Line – Scary idea that would work better if they helped make us care for some of the characters more. The games that these character play are psychotic and constantly make you wonder what will eventually happen.  I wanted it to feel more engaging, but the way that things are kept at too much of a distance just takes away from that.  Not something that I really would want to watch again for numerous reasons.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Tim Roth has said making this film abused him, and he’ll never watch it. He said he was particularly disturbed because Devon Gearhart resembled his own son.  (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. I agree the movie would work better if you cared about the characters more. I know that director Heneke wanted to make a statement about our love of violence in movies and so I found it interesting that he made a very violent movie where there was very little of it shown. All the really horrendous parts are shown off screen. Which makes them that much more disturbing
