The Expendables (2010)

“Only thing you need to know is the job’s real, and the money’s real. ” – Mr. Church

Number of Times Seen – 2 (23 Nov 2010 and 23 May 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A group of mercenaries are hired by the CIA to stop a Central American drug lord.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw not long after it came out but wasn’t really impressed by anything that they did.

Since this milestone marathon actually coincides with my attempt to watch all of Arnold Schwarzenegger films, I chose to check out this trilogy that is mean to be a modern throwback to 80’s action films.

This film gives us just that; its a fun 80’s style action flick, with a silly plot, lots of death, destruction and explosions and quirky one liners.

The cast of this film is a really superb eclectic band of known action stars from days gone by who finally work together in a film instead of competing for the box office figures head to head.

The iconic scene in this film that has Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Arnie finally having a scene together is something many 80’s action fans have been hoping would one day occur for over 3 decades.

This film gives us very few surprises along the way and given that one of the goals of these kind of films is a high body count, this film ends up having a body count of 188.

Good popcorn movie if you wanna turn your brain off for close to 2 hours.

Bottom Line – Delivers exactly what one can expect from this film and nothing more. The cast is superb and it was nice seeing some of these actors work together for the very first time.  The story fits with the kind of plots used in action flicks of the 80’s and there are very few surprises since the goal is to have the highest body count as possible. Fun film that offers absolutely nothing besides good popcorn fun with lots of death and explosions.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Mickey Rourke said he did this film as a favor to Sylvester Stallone, who years earlier, when Rourke was in a career slump, offered him a major role in Get Carter (2000) and helped to pay part of Rourke’s salary himself. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
