Mid90s (2018)

“A lot of the time we feel that our lives the worst, but I think that if you looked in anybody else’s closet, you wouldn’t trade your sh*t for their sh*t. So let’s go. ” – Ray

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Dec 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A coming of age tale of a young boy from a single parent home in LA during the 90’s.

My Take on it – I was intrigued to watch this film since it’s the directorial debut of actor Jonah Hill.

He is a great actor ad I hoped that his transition to writer and director would also have similar flair.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t at all.

This is a film that makes so little sense about all that is going on and that in turn causes things to be even more confusing.

The characters don’t feel as if they have much story for us to care about and too much happens here that make no sense whatsoever.

The cast of this film isn’t too memorable because nothing of substance or interest actually comes out of the story.

There is no one who stands out among the rest of the cast that makes us want to care about what happens to them.

The characters themselves are also very unmemorable and none of them manage to really do anything along the way here.

The premise of this film is actually quite interesting but it could have been achieved probably even more profoundly as a short film of approx 15 minutes instead of having to be tortured through 90 minutes of runtime that just seems to ramble on and on non-stop.

This is all quite unfortunate since this is Hill’s directorial debut, but even he needs to bring us something much more entertaining and engaging throughout when thinking of future projects.

Bottom Line – Terrible film because not much of it makes sense. The characters are all over the place and things happen without any kind of preparation despite the fact that they were meant to flow through.  The cast isn’t memorable at all and none of them stick out among the rest.  The story has an interesting kind of premise, but it rambles on too much for 90 minutes instead of just making a short 15 minute film dealing with the subjects that they try to bring up here.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After a test screening, the projectionist said to the filmmakers that it was so cool that they found a movie from the ’90s that they were releasing. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)

  1. Agree with you on this. Total waste. Plotless and meandering. Gotta figure only reason Hedges is in this – is he’s friends with Jonah. I think he chose his cast because they all LOOKED the parts. Unfortunately, they can’t ACT the parts.
