My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006)

“Why did G-Girl throw a shark at us? ” – Hannah Lewis

Number of Times Seen – Twice (6 Jan 2007 and 24 Feb 2020)

Brief Synopsis – An architect must find a way to deal with his ex-girlfriend who uses her super powers to make his life very difficult after he dumps her.

My Take on it – As a fan of superhero stories and films, I was looking forward to rewatching this film since I hadn’t seen it in over a decade.

The story is quite fun and they do a nice job adding a clever twist to the usual relationship break up story.

The cast is also pretty good here with Luke Wilson, Uma Thruman, Eddie Izzard and Anna Faris all playing their parts perfectly even if they all come across as complete and total stereotypes of these kind of personalities and characters in a superhero story.

The story is played out in a pretty boring and bland way and they present certain aspects of things in a strange way which takes away from the enjoyment of this movie.

The problem is that the premise is actually an intriguing one but they fails to make it work even better here.

The superhero aspects of the film are fun to watch because they deal with issues usually not shown in kid-friendly superhero films.

The story doesn’t manage to have enough original appeal to it and things feel a bit too standard and predictable which also takes away from how one can enjoy this movie.

Bottom Line – Fun film with a very interesting twist to the idea of a relationship movie. Wilson, Thurman, Izzard and Faris are all great in their roles and each fits a stereotype to the T. The story itself is a bit bland tho and things feel a bot too repetitious as things move along which is a bit problematic.  The premise is actually a good one, but things aren’t presented as well as they probably could be.  Love the superhero aspect of the story even though they don’t manage to give this story enough original appeal and things feel a bit too standard the whole way through.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The names Jenny Johnson and G-Girl are alliterative, similar to numerous Marvel and DC characters. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
