Defending Jacob (2020)

“We’re sailing towards an iceberg. this little white peak in the distance getting closer and closer, but really it’s been underneath us this whole time.” – Jacob Barber

Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Jun 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A small town prosecutor has his life altered when his teenage son is accused of murdering a classmate.

My Take on it – This is a mini series that I heard about a few weeks ago and was excited to see especially given the fact that it is based on an award winning novel.

The story has some great twists and turns along the way that make the viewer guess so much along the way because things are constantly changing directions.

Chris Evans has made a name for himself over the last decade as an action hero and this lead role allows him to show how great a dramatic actor he can be.

His character carries the story and keeps things so compelling throughout.

The story is built up really well and the fact that this is nearly a 7 hour miniseries helps them take their time introducing and developing these characters as things unfold.

We get to see how an accusation like this could affect a family and those close to them in so many ways which is fascinating to see.

This film is able to leave so many aspects of the story quite ambiguous throughout and that adds to so much of the suspense and tension because we never are truly sure what is happening.

In addition to Evans, the supporting cast is also great with Jaeden Martell, Cherry Jones, Michelle Dockery and the ever dependable J.K. Simmons all delivering riveting performances.

The 7 hour run time of this story helps the viewer invest so much in these characters and that makes it so enjoyable to watch what happens because we can care so much about what happens to them as the story moves along sometimes in some very unsuspecting ways.

Bottom Line – Thrilling story that works really well especially due to the various twists and turns along the way. Evans shows how great a dramatic actor he can be and holds this story together so well.  The story is built really well and allows us to see how such an accusation can affect a family and those that they know in so many ways.  Love the way that this film is able to leave so many aspects open in ambiguous ways which helps the story unfold in a very thrilling and suspenseful way.  The supporting cast is also great especially Martell, Jones, Dockery and the ever dependable Simmons.  The nearly 7 hour runtime helps us get to know these characters really well and that helps the viewer invest so much in caring about what happens to them along the way. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Chris Evans and Jaeden Martell play father and son in this project. They previously appeared together in Playing It Cool (2014), playing the same character at different ages, and in Knives Out (2019) playing cousins. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
