Grabbers (2012) Movie Review

Grabbers is directed by Unwelcome director Jon Wright. The movie stars Flyboys Ruth Bradley, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Richard Coyle and The Good Liar Russell Tovey. Grabbers sees the residents of a small Irish Island coming under threat from an unknown creature from the sea.

The movie follows Garda Lisa Nolan (Bradley) taking a cover role on the small island. As she arrives, she must work with alcoholic Garda Ciaran O’Shea (Coyle) dealing with the petty little crimes on the island. However, Paddy Barrett (Roddy) discovers something strange in the water and Dr Adam Smith (Tovey) wants to examine it.

The group discover one thing about the unknown creature, it can’t handle alcohol. This leads to the group needing to get the whole island together as a storm is heading their way. They must get everybody drunk in the defence to stop them from getting caught by the deadly creature.

Grabbers is a low budget creature feature and it jumps at the opportunity to make the most of this. It gets plenty of laughs along the way and turns to needing to pay attention to stop something dangerous on its head, by needing the characters to be drunk. This is a lot of fun and the creature creations are well designed. The island setting shows the pub next to the waterfront as they are unaware of what is waiting in the water.

My Rating 4/5
