Genre Guesstimation – Pitch Black (2000) – Encore Review

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Paul of the People’s Movies and we will be reviewing our favorite Films that feature/take place in Desert areas.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Apr by sending them to desert@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Films that feature/take place in Desert areas……

Brief Synopsis – After a spaceship crash lands on a desert planet, the survivors must enlist the aid of a convict on board in order to survive the dangerous aliens on the planet.

My Take on it – Great thriller that manages to find an innovative and unique way to constantly keep raising the stakes. The cast is great and Vin Diesel shows that he is able to take the lead. The special effects are fine, but the aliens never seem to look menacing enough especially given the fact that they look too similar to aliens from other films.  The film has some nice twists and turns that helps enhance the action scenes.  There are a few scenes that drag a bot too much along the way, but overall, the fact that it’s a no holds barred suspense horror film where everyone is in real danger helps make it quite enjoyable to watch unfold.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Pitch Black (2000) was supposed to be a stand-alone film, but during production, Vin Diesel and the cast and crew had become intrigued by the Riddick character and the ending, in which Riddick was supposed to die. This was changed to leave an opening for a sequel with Vin Diesel returning. The film spawned three sequels, Dark Fury (animated), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013). (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes close. Diesel is great here, but something is missing that would make this much more powerful.

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10) (no change from original review)
