The Lords of Discipline (1983)

lords of discipline“His name will never be mentioned again by a member of the Institute. Let him go from us forever. Let him begin The Walk of Shame.” – Gen. Bentley Durrell

Number of Times Seen – About 5 times  (cable in the 80’s, Video and15 Jul 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A senior in an exclusive Southern military academy tries to uncover a secret organization that is trying to scare away an unwanted negro cadet in the early 60’s.

My Take on it – In high school, I read Pat Conroy’s three major novels and loved them all.

This is another horrendously adapted novel that left so much of the plot and conflict far from the screen.

So much exposition was discarded and it leaves the viewer with so much unanswered instead of explaining things the way it was in the novel. Important chatacters are excised and none of the ones left are developed at all.

Perhaps if they had used narration to give us more insight it might have been better.

This is definitely a case where I say dont watch the movie, just read the book!

Bottom Line – Another amazing Pat Conroy novel destroyed when put on the screen. Read the book and steer clear of this terrible adaptation.

Rating – Razzie Worthy
