Genre Guesstimation – A Fish Called Wanda (1988)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by Drew of Drew’s Movie Reviews we will be reviewing our favorite Heist Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of March (tomorrow) by sending them to drewsheist@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box!

Great choice Drew!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Heist Films…

fish“I looked at the clock… because I was saying to myself… It’s five to seven, where could he be going with that sawed off shotgun?” – Wanda

Number of Times Seen – between 3-5 (cable in the 80’s and 90’s and 20 Mar 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A group of bungling thieves commit a robbery and then try to outwit one another in order to keep it all for themselves.

My Take on it – This is a great example of a movie that has great characters in funny situations who all think they are the cleverest person in the room.

The cast chosen for this movie works so well together that they reunited John Cleese, Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Palin a few years later to make a whole new movie called Fierce Creatures (1997) along with other returning cast and crew members.

The standout is obviously Kevin Kline who is amazing as Otto and really deserved his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this role.

The characters were created so well that they were able to act both smart and stupid all depending on their particular situation.

Honor among thieves is really the theme here and they do it nearly perfectly.

Not necessarily a film for animal rights or handicapped activists, but hilarious nonetheless!

Bottom Line – Amazing cast that really work well together. Kline is superb here as Otto and definitely deserved his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Loved how each of the characters acted both smart and stupid depending on the particular situation. Emphasizes the fact that even thieves must be careful with who they want to trust. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Michael Palin went on to found the London Centre for Stammering Children after a group of stutterers confronted him regarding the sensitivity with which he dealt with Ken’s handicap in this film. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Most definitely! Really hits the mark on so many levels

Rating – Oscar Worthy
