Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Aug 2016)

Brief Synopsis – During their 5 year mission, the crew of the Enterprise is sent on a rescue mission in a nebula where it isn’t possible to communicate with Starfleet.

My Take on it – I have been waiting to see this film for quite some time.

I’m a HUGE fan of the previous two films in the rebooted series and when I heard it was coming out on July 21st, I already decided that I was gonna play hookie from work so I could see one of the first showings.

To my dismay, they pushed back the the premiere here in Israel until last week (25th of August) and I had to agonize over the fact that I couldn’t read anyone else’s reviews of it until I was able to see this.

Being that I recently initiated two of my sons into the Star Trek reboot movie fan club, I decided to take them to see it on their last Friday of vacation as a treat to them (and me of course)

Right from the start, I was sucked into this movie and was so happy with so many things of what they did.

I really liked the way that they gave us a bit more info about the characters we already knew and at the same time created some great new characters for us to ingest along the way.

The overall theme of this film is the fact that a crew is just the sum parts of a whole and that they all need to work together to achieve greatness.

This way they were also able to highlight the unique abilities of each character that help them all make up such a great team.

This film has lots and lots of action sequences and they help things move along at a fun pace.

There are also some amazing scenes that are quite somber especially knowing that two prominent cast members passed away in the last two years.  These moments make things feel even more personal for the viewer and I teared up and almost cried a few times while watching those scenes.

This is a great addition to the Star Trek canon and despite the other two movies being slightly better than this one, it still comes quite close to reaching the level of the others.

My sons, on the other hand, think this was the best of the three; it’s a good thing that my wife and I allow diverse opinions even under our own roof. 🙂

I can’t wiat to get a chance to see this one again!

Bottom Line – Another great addition to the Star Trek canon. Great new characters are introduced while more is expanded on existing characters. Loved the theme of the crew as the sum parts of a whole which was able to highlight the different and unique qualities of each individual crew member. Lots of action keeps things fun but the somber moments help make this feel even more personal. Not as great as the first two movies of the series but quite close. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Simon Pegg identified the space station as “Starbase Yorktown” in early interviews. “Yorktown” was the original name of the starship in Gene Roddenberry’s early script treatments for the original Star Trek (1966) series, before this was changed to “Enterprise”. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy
