Pear Cider and Cigarettes (2016)

pear-cider-and-cigarettes“Hey Rob, if you’re reading this, it means I’m dead.” – Techno

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Mar 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A man thinks back on his long friendship with a self destructive friend from his childhood.

My Take on it – THis was the only one of the 5 Oscar nominees for best animated short film that I didn’t get to see before the show this past week.

I now understand how and why this film was deserving of the nomination, but also understand at the same time how it didn’t win.

The story here is quite intensely shown to us as we get to see via visuals and narration the long friendship between two individuals and how one of them led a very self destructive life for most of those years.

Many of us have had friends or colleagues who have gone through similar issues helping friends with their issues and from that perspective, it’s easier to sympathize with this very deep and heavy storyline.

They chose a great way to tell this story and it was quite interesting to watch it all unfold even though we already know where things are heading from the start, we just don’t know exactly how it will get there.

The animations is done quite well and is wondrous to watch because it joins together both the visuals and narration is a great way.

This is quite a deep and personal film that might get a bit too “real” for some people, but I still was able to enjoy it quite a lot despite that.

I would definitely be interested in seeing what else Robert Valley has in store for us in the future.

Bottom Line – Very interesting way to tell a story.  We get to know so much about a person’s life based solely on what his best friend recalls about him.  The animation is wondrous to watch because it follows the verbal narration so well.  I can understand how this film could get nominated for an Oscar, but I can also understand how it didn’t win despite being done quite well. REcommended!

  1. I thought this was a fascinating short and worth the few bucks I tossed towards the Vimeo on demand version as I knew that would likely most benefit the director. Techno sounded like a fascinating guy and by proxy so did Robert Valley. Good stuff!
