Hanky Panky (1982)

“I am doing something! I’m crashing an airplane! ” – Michael

Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Jun 2017)

Brief Synopsis – After a businessman shares a cab with a mysterious woman, he is pursued by secret agents while also being falsely accused of murder.

My Take on it – Gene Wilder was always great in the wrongly accused man role and one could actually say that he excelled at that kind of role.

He is perfect here and helps keep us constantly wondering how he also did so well in these kind of roles.

His characters always seem so innocent yet are always accused of some really horrific crimes.

When Richard Pryor backed out as his partner in this film, Gilda Ratner (Wilder’s soon to be new wife) was cast in the reworked role.

Ratner and Wilder have amazing energy together and it’s too bad they didn’t get the chance to work together much afterward.

The plot is a typical wrongfully accused one yet the comedic timing of Wilder plus the supporting cast help make this film feel innovation and unique despite being very predictable in numerous places.

Bottom Line – Wilder is great in this kind of role because he seems so innocent yet is constantly being accused of quite heinous crimes. Radner was a great choice as his partner and the two of them have amazing chemistry together. The plot is typical for this kind of genre yet they do a fine job of making it feel unique and innovative despite being pretty predictable. Recommended

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Director Sidney Poitier, a stickler for realism, said of this movie’s location shooting: “We had to film on location. There is only one New York and one Boston. Each city has a character of its own which was essential to the film. You just can’t fake it”. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
