90 Days of Oscar Nominees #34 – State Fair (1933)

In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 90 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 5 Dec 2017 and The 90th Annual Oscars on 4 Mar 2018.

Here is my 34th review of the 90 chosen Films…

“So did Henry VIII, eight of them, but he always showed up at every state affair with a new one.” – Storekeeper

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A small farm family of four travel to the Iowa State Fair all with different expectations for the trip.

My Take on it – Here is yet another film from the early 1930’s that baffles me as to how it was able to garner a nomination for Best Picture.

This film was extremely boring and not much really happens that is profound.

I know that this film was based on a best selling novel that was quite risque for its time, but they don’t manage to do a very good job translating it into an interesting screen story.

The characters don’t come across as being memorable in any way or fashion.

I was extremely happy when it finally ended because it was such a boring story to watch unfold.

Besides getting a nomination for Best Picture, it also got a nomination for best adapted screenplay, but didn’t manage to win either of them.

I gues sthis is the kind of film that was more appreciated at the dawn of movies as opposed to 85+ years later.

Bottom Line – Pretty boring film. Not much actually happens and it moves along extremely slowly.  None of the characters are that memorable and I was quite happy when it was finally over. Another film that I have no idea how it managed to receive a nomination for Best Picture. It also was nominated for Best adapted screenplay and also didn’t manage to win that award either.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Most of the credits appear as posters being put up on billboards by workmen. In the film’s final scene, there is a heavy rain, and as it washes away the poster bearing the title “State Fair”, we see that it was pasted over another poster that says “The End”. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
