“You have to PLAY the game, to find out WHY you’re playing the game.” – Allegra
Number of Times Seen – 2 (10 Jun 2000 and 22 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A focus group is brought in to test the latest virtual reality game where things feel very real that it’s very difficult to tell the difference between the real or fictional world.
My Take on it – This is a film that saw now long after it came out and absolutely hated it.
I wasn’t looking forward to revisiting it, but I knew that there is always a chance that things could be very different this time around.
Boy, was that the right decision, because I really enjoyed this film and am somewhat baffled as to why I hated it 18 years ago.
The premise works really well because it constantly evolves as the story moves along and we never quite know what to believe.
They manage to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat throughout due to the various twists and turns along the way that you never are 100% sure what is real and what is make believe.
What blew my mind was the fact that most of the technology in this film seems somewhat realistic and it wouldn’t surprise me if one day, science moves into that kind of direction.
The cast is superb with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law both perfectly chosen to play the two leads.
I’m actually quite happy that this film turned out to be my 4000th review because it goes to show that even after so many years , films and reviews, our opinions can change, so we should always be willing to give a film another chance even if our memory tells us that we didn’t enjoy it at all.
Bottom Line – Great premise that works because things are constantly evolving throughout the film. The way that the story unfold keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat the whole time because you never know what will happen next. Amazing how the technology in the film feels so realistic and could one day deem to be prophetic. Great cast led by Jason Leigh and Law works really well. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – David Cronenberg claimed his inspiration for the film, was the fatwa declared on Author Salman Rushdie, following the publication of his book “The Satanic Verses”. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
