Jury Duty (1995)

“If a small taco is a taquito, then a small judge… must be a Judge Ito! ” Tommy Collins

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Apr 2019)

Brief Synopsis – After being summons to jury duty, a wannabe male stripper without a job decides to try and drag out a case in order to receive an income along the way.

My Take on it – This is a film that has a very clever premise that doesn’t manage to work at all due to the poor fashion that it is presented in.

Pauly Shore isn’t effective as a comedic actor (or as an actor at all) and this film is further proof that he was given way too many chance in Hollywood under the pseudonym of being a funny comedian.

This film does have its moments but it tries too hard to succeed with juvenile jokes that fail.

It doesn’t manage to keep things funny and enjoyable as a comedy should.

The film is filled with plot holes galore that don’t even help make the story more workable.

The cast of this film is pretty talented and it’s a shame that many of them were delegated to stereotypical roles that seem like caricatures throughout.

They are all mostly wasted in this film.

Te best part of this movie is the use of Abe Vigoda as the Judge who is pretty funny even when he isn’t trying to be.

Not all of his scenes are effective, but he still manages to bring a presence to this movie that none of the other actors succeed in doing.

Bottom Line – Clever idea that is presented really poorly. Shore is not a funny actor at all and this film is further proof of that fact.  The film has it’s moments but overall is too juvenile for its own good and doesn’t manage to keep things funny and enjoyable as a comedy should. The story is filled with many plot holes that don’t even manage to help the story move along. The cast is actually quite talented yet they are mostly wasted throughout. Vigoda is the best thing about this film as the judge, but he even has moments which he isn’t effective enough.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Tommy (Pauly Shore) drives with Frank (Stanley Tucci) to tell Monica (Tia Carrere) about the murderer, the song playing is the theme song for S.W.A.T. (1975) (From IMDB)

Rating –Razzie Worthy (3/10)
