The Manhattan Project (1986)

“I never thought I’d say this to anybody, but I got to go get the atomic bomb out of the car.” – Paul Stephens

Number of Times Seen – at least twice (Cable in the 80’s and 10 Sep 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A high school genius decides to steal radioactive material from a local military installation in order to make a nuclear bomb for a science project for school.

My Take on it – This is another film that I recall seeing as a kid on cable in the 80’s but didn’t remember anything about besides the fact that it stars John Lithgow.

The film’s plot and story are pretty silly and the way things play out make no sense what so ever and that hurts things a lot.

None of the characters are developed at all and they all seem quite superficial and aren’t successful in making this film any more interesting to watch.

Each of the characters make some terrible decisions along the way which end up resulting in even greater problems that they for some strange reason don;t foresee especially since they are all quite obvious.

This is a movie that probably was much better received when it was made since it came out during the height of the Cold War in the 80’s.

This is a story that seems to try and mix together the concepts of Wargames (1983) and Real Genius (1985) to no avail and depsite the fact that the lead character is meant to be extremely intelligent, he does some really silly things along the way.

This film is a horrendous idea that misses its mark so often and fails to be impactful on any level.

Bottom Line – Really silly film that makes no sense whatsoever. The characters are all very superficial and fail to help make the story more interesting. They all seem to make some very bad decisions that result in even greater problems that they don’t foresee even though they are quite clear. The movie might have been much better at the time that it was made since the world was in the midst of The Cold War.  The story itself seems like a mix between Wargames (1983) and Real Genius (1985) and even though the characters are meant to be extremely intelligent, they do some really silly things along the way.  Terrible idea that doesn’t manage to be impactful at all.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The science projects and kids in the background of the science fair scenes were actual NYC middle school students with real science projects which were submitted to the NYC borough-wide science fair. These scenes were filmed over a three-day period at the Penta Hotel in NYC on 33rd St. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
