Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Jan 2016)
Brief Synopsis – In the old West, four men go on a rescue mission and have no real idea what kind of danger they are heading into.
My Take on it – I am still surprised how such a great movie like this went under my radar for so long.
I can’t say that I’ve been the biggest fan of Westerns in the past, but when done right, they can be quite magical.
This is a very difficult movie to discuss without containing spoilers, so I’m gonna tread quite carefully here.
The script is written perfectly by writer/director S. Craig Zahler. He sets the scenes and characters so perfectly that we truly feel as if we are there with them. I can’t wait to see more of what he has to offer us on the screen.
Its easy to care about the characters and we want them all to return alive.
I lived how the plot felt so unique in both its execution and in its surprises along the way. This is a film where you really have to pay attention the entire time so you don’t miss anything important.
The cast is lean but superb – Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox and Richard Jenkins are all perfectly cast in their respective roles.
I can’t wait to see this again just to try and catch all that I probably missed the first time around.
Bottom Line – Expertly written Western that makes us care about the characters quite quickly. Plot is definitely unique in both its execution and surprises along the way. Great lead cast of four played by Russell, Wilson, Fox and Jenkins. Highly recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The final movie represents the first draft of the script. (From IMDB)
