1. Oprah Winfrey
Movies
4. Agnes of God – Didn’t like the storyline very much, had higher hopes for this mediocre movie eventhough Tilly and Fonda are both pretty good here.
3. Twice in a Lifetime – Appealing story, but at points it is very slow paced. Hackman is great in this role.
2. Prizzi’s Honor – Nicholson and Turner are great here in the dark comedy about the mob. The story flows well and despite the characters not being as intelligent as those in most gangster films, it’s still lots of fun watching them. Interesting look at the dynamics of a mobster family gives us so much perspective on how things work. Supporting cast helps make this work even better especially Huston and Randolph in key roles.
1. The Color Purple – Great film that comes across quite tame given the subject matter. I think that might have to do with the fact of when and by whom it was made. Spielberg is an amazing director, but I’m not sure he was ready for such serious subject matter. Goldberg is superb in the lead and should have won the Oscar over Page. Her Oscar for Ghost (1990) probably was an attempt to fix past errors. The story is very brutal and even at 2 and half hours, this film feels too short and could have explored things even more in depth. Holds the record (tied with The Turning Point (1977)) for the film with the most Oscar nominations with no wins (11).
Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Yes and No! Ah is great here but OW would probably have been a much better choice
Let me know what you think about these films and my rankings!
Would’ve been good with anyone but Madigan. Oprah was excellent- so was Avery as “Shug” – so they canceled out. Tilly was terrific as the nun and Huston held her own opposite Jack – no small task. As for McGillis – she was excellent as was the entire cast of Witness. And other than Ford’s sister in the film (played by Patti LuPone) – she was just about the only female role of note – and might have been considered a Lead, not supporting.
