The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s Genre was chosen by Justine of Justine’s Movie Blog and she chose Coming of Age Films as the Genre for February. Thanks Justine!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Coming of Age movies…
“If you were happy every day of your life you wouldn’t be a human being. You’d be a game-show host.” Veronica Sawyer
Number of Times Seen – Between 5 – 10 times(Theater in 1988, cable, video and 19 Feb 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A rebellious teenager befriends a new boy in school who tries to help her fit in and become more powerful with the popular crowd in high school through s very interesting method.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I enjoyed much more when I was younger.
Christian Slater and Winona Ryder are both great here, but the storyline is very dark, actually in some places too dark and it comes off as too much.
The questions about acceptance and popularity for teenagers in high school are excellent, but the execution is a bit over the top.
I think that if this movie was made now, it would be done very differently.
I’m not saying if it would be done better or worse, but definitely the way movies are made now, the resukying movie would have been different.
Bottom Line – Very dark comedic look at growing up and wanting popularity and acceptance in high school that is done well but is too over the top. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Two stars of the movie died at an early age: Jeremy Applegate (Peter Dawson, whose character prays he will never commit suicide) committed suicide with a shotgun on March 23, 2000, and Kim Walker (Heather Chandler, who had the line “Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?”) died of a brain tumor on March 6, 2001. (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Enjoyed it much more back in the 80’s, but it just isn’t as powerful now as it was then.
Rating – Globe Worthy
