Forced Movies 2017 #6 – Deep Blue Sea (1999)

“Nature is lethal but it doesn’t hold a candle to man. ” – Russell Franklin

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 May 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A group of scientists doing experiments on sharks become bait when the sharks decide to take control of the Research facility.

My Take on it – I’ve never been a fan of monster movies but when Jay recommended this film, I was actually a bit excited since I knew that the cast featured some great actors.

This film is headlined by Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J, Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, Jacqueline McKenzie, Michael Rappaport and Stellan Skarsgard.

Obviously in a film like this, none of the characters are safe and I liked the fact that the stakes are raised since we know that even the most famous and recognizable cast members might not make it out alive in the end.

This film actually feels like a cross between a Jaws film and a Jurassic Park movie and parts work much better than others.

I didn’t find the film too scary (which is good) and I liked how we get to know the characters a bit which makes us care whether they make it out alive or not.

The biggest problem with this film is the fact that the special effects are done really poorly and that actually takes away from the realistic feel of the story.

All in all, this is a fun film with a pretty silly premise but is still filled with some good action scenes.

Bottom Line – Quite a silly yet fun film. The storyline is typical of films in this genre and parts of this movie make much more sense than others.  The cast is great and you never know who is safe because in these kind of films no one is safe. The special effects are quite poorly done and it can easily see that the effects need much more work to make it seem more realistic.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The license plate pulled from a shark’s teeth, is the same plate as the one found in the tiger shark in Jaws (1975). (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. Hahah. Memories. This was a b-movie done right. While it’s nearly 20 years on, and the FX have aged, at the time it looked ‘real’ enough. The fun action and laughs kept the momentum rolling too. Sam Jackson has one of the best ‘moments’ too… naturally. Thanks for the reminder. I kinda wanna watch this again 🙂
